Curtailing kids work on farms

The Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation is warning about ongoing federal regulatory "creep," including updates to agriculture labor laws for people under 18. Spokesman Casey Langan says the proposed rule changes will "drastically reduce the amount of work that youth can do on farms." The Bureau is concerned the proposals will make managing family farms more difficult. Among the proposed regulations is restricting the operation of power-driven machines to those 16 and older. District may move to four day school week

A small school district in western Wisconsin may become the first in the state to switch to a four-day school week. The Department of Public Instruction has given the Blair-Taylor district the okay to explore a four-day week for the next school year, which starts this fall. State now managing wolf population

Starting today, the state Department of Natural Resources now has greater authority to manage Wisconsin's grey wolf population. Wisconsin's grey wolves are no longer considered a federally endangered species, and DNR mammal ecologist Adrian Wydeven says that will allow the state to have more control. While the state is still very concerned about the conservation of wolves, he says the change gives them more authority to balance those issues with controlling problem animals.
